13th Chief S.L Edu Memorial Lecture

The 13th Chief S.L. Edu Memorial Lecture will hold on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, 13/15, Kofo Abayomi Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, at  12:00 noon.


The Guest Lecturer is Professor Victor Olawale Adetimirin, a Professor of Plant Breeding & Crop Production and Head, Department of Agronomy, University of Ibadan, Nigeria.  He will speak on “Sustainable Agriculture and the Environment in Nigeria”.


The S.L. Edu Memorial Lecture was initiated by NCF to immortalize the founder and first President of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, Chief Shafi Lawal Edu. This Memorial Lecture which holds annually is aimed primarily at instigating broad public discourse of environmental issues and policies.


In the past eleven years, lecturers in this series of lectures have expressed concern over the danger inherent in development processes that do not consider nor are designed in harmony with ecosystem processes. The event which is supported by Chevron Nigeria Limited is also used as avenue to award scholarship grants to doctoral (PhD) students who embark on research in the area of environment and conservation in Nigeria.


A broad and diverse audience comprising of policy makers in the public sector, members of the organized private sector,  students, the media (local and International) and other environmental stakeholders usually attend the Lecture. 

Guest Speakers of the lecture in the past were;  Professor Charles Okidi, University of Nairobi, Kenya (2003)  Professor David Okali, University of Ibadan (2004), Nigeria’s former Head of State,  Chief  Ernest Shonekan (2005), Professor Anthony Imevbore,(2006), President, NCF,  Chief Philip Asiodu,CON (2007),  then Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,  Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, (2008),  Former Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Agagu (2009) ,  Director of the Fight Against Desert Encroachment (FADE), Dr. Newton Jibunoh (2010),  Leventis Fellow at Birdlife International, Dr. Nigel Collar (2011), the Nigeria Joint Special Representative, AU/UN Hybrid Operation, Darfur, (UNAMID), Sudan, Ambassador (Professor) Ibrahim A. Gambari, CFR (2012) and The Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Nations, Professor Joy Ogwu, OFR (2013) .
