NCF to discuss sustainable agriculture and the environment

The leading environmental group, Nigerian Conservation Foundation as part of her sustainable development agenda for the new year, has concluded arrangements for a lecture on Sustainable Agriculture and the Environment. 


At the 13th Chief Shafi Lawal Edu Memorial Lecture scheduled for January 14, 2015 in Lagos, Professor Victor Olawale Adetimirin, a Professor of Plant Breeding & Crop Production, and Head, Department of Agronomy, University of Ibadan will deliver the lecture on the theme "Sustainable Agriculture and the Environment" at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Lagos. 


As the organizers of the Lecture,  agriculture is a major drive of most developing economies. Nigeria, as a leading economies in Africa, will not only depend on foreign exchange earnings from oil and gas, but also rely on agriculture products for improved GDP. Sustainable agriculture looks at the production, processing and marketing of agriculture that support a substantial yield today and all functions that sustain such yield in future. Maintaining environmental services and ecosystem integrity are major functional elements of sustainable agriculture. 


"NCF believes that  all efforts aimed at developing agriculture in Nigeria will only bring a rewarding future when all issues regarding ecosystem functioning are given proper attention. Therefore, the lecture will focus on all issues relating to sustainable agriculture and the environment as Nigeria progresses in her agriculture transformation agenda". 


The occasion will also be used  to award scholarship grants to another set of doctoral students in Nigerian Universities. Supported by Chevron Nigeria Limited, the research grants are for Nigerians wishing to undertake research work in fields related to nature conservation and sustainable livelihood.  The grant shall be for three years leading to a PhD degree. 


"The Nigerian Conservation Foundation will continue to encourage students who embark on research that meets its mission of: The preservation of a full range of Nigeria’s biodiversity which includes species, ecosystems and genetic biodiversity, the promotion of sustainable use of natural resources for the benefit of present and future generations; and the advocacy of actions that minimize pollution and wasteful utilization of renewable resources". 


The S.L. Edu Memorial Lecture was initiated by NCF to immortalize the Founder and first President of the Foundation, Late Chief Shafi Lawal Edu. In the past Twelve  years, lecturers in this series of lectures have expressed concern over the danger inherent in development processes that do not consider nor are designed in harmony with ecosystem processes”.
