The Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) commemorated this year’s World Environment Day (WED) with presentations from 21 schools and discussions by experts on the theme “Air Pollution”.
The Director General of NCF, Dr. Muhtari Aminu-Kano in his welcome address, emphasised the hazard of air pollution in our environment. Mentioning the tragedy that struck in Imo State on Monday after fumes from a generator left 10 guests who attended a traditional wedding dead. He was of the opinion that such a sad incident would have been averted if power supply in Nigeria has been effective, and the host wouldn’t have any reason to put on the generator that led to the family disaster.
Part of the activities of the day were the presentations of drama, poem, music and exhibition by the school pupils. They were categorized into 3 age categories; 5 to 8 years (Primary), 9 to 12years (Junior) and 13 to 16 years (Senior). Amber Ville School, Ajah; Learning Ladder Montessori School, Ajah and Falomo High School, Ikoyi emerged winners in the 3 categories respectively.
A consultant pulmonary surgeon, LASUTH, Dr. Femi Ojo; Head of Operations, IHS Towers, Mr. Olukorede Alayemola and Business Manager of Carbon Credit, Mr. Olatunji Balogun were the discussants that expatiated and educated the participants on the causes, effects and preventive measures to air pollution. The session was moderated by Mrs. Funmi Ilori.
The Group Head, Corporate Affairs, FCMB, Mr. Diran Olojo, Supervisor Environment, Chevron Nigeria Ltd, Mrs. Adedamola Abudu and the representative of Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Environment, Mrs. Aderonke Adeneye delivered goodwill messages on behalf of their organisations.
Participants from schools, corporate organisations and media defied the rain to participate in the event held at Lekki Conservation Centre (LCC) on Tuesday, 11th June 2019. Event was supported by IHS Towers, FCMB, Nestle Nigeria Plc, Topjoy Concept International, Lekki Concession Company, Fanmilk Plc and Nigerian Bottling Company.
Also in attendance were NCF Council Member, Chairman of LUFASI, Mr. Desmond Majekodunmi, Manager of Public Affairs, Chevron Nigeria, Mr. Tom Akagbosu and Director of Technical Programme, NCF, Dr. Joseph Onoja.
